Tips If You Are Brand New to Oculus VR
Here is a list of the little things that might be unnatural in the beginning.
Will update this post as \my parents & I learn what we find tricky versus natural.
- Adjust Your Headset Regularly to Focus.
This took me a bit to get used to. I have perfect vision, but it took me a while to adjust to reading in Oculus VR (link HERE if you need help setting up Oculus with glasses).
The key I found to adjusting focus is:
A. Adjusting the "between-eye-space" &
B. Physically securing the headset
The biggest tip I have is that physically adjusting the headset can be distracting in the beginning, but keep adjusting and don't give up.
When I took my Oculus out of the box, I easily adjusted the space between the eyes by snapping them into three different settings (like binoculars). The head straps are adjustable, but I didn't immediately realize how important adjusting the straps is. While my eyes seem to adjust best to the "most narrow between-eye" setting, it took quite a while to figure out how tightly to adjust the strap, and how high it should sit on my head. In the beginning, I re-adjusted the strap every few minutes. Over time it became easier to gauge what would be comfortable- by my second week of nearly daily use, I adjust far less often. My point is, when it seems blurry, re-adjust your headset, and eventually you will set it up right without even noticing. - Get comfortable resetting the Guardian
This is a key skill to learn and practice early. Oculus set-up is very intuitive, designed to walk you through the set-up, on-par with Apple products. When you take your Oculus out of the box, it will walk you through setting the Guardian, and setting up your boundaries.
The Guardian can be thought of as two parts:
A. Floor level &
B. Your boundaries or 'play area' (can also select stationary/sitting)
The floor level is relatively simple once you set it once or twice. Boundaries, on the other hand, come in two 'flavors' and each has it's own learning curve. \When you are new, try out all the options in the Guardian. Then challenge yourself to learn to re-adjust your Guardian when you are already playing an app. This will help avoid frustration that occurs when a game doesn't seem to "recognize" where you are sitting. For example, a table may be at your eye level, or lower than your butt. These experiences can be frustrating, but easy to alleviate by re-setting your guardian. - Your 'Home' button is the depression in the right-hand controller with an 'O' logo
- Go slowly
- First Steps is my favorite beginner app, I recommend spending a lot of time playing it!
My fiancé was much faster at I was to get used to the Oculus apps, and I think it's because he spent a lot of time learning the controls via First Steps.
